Every child with autism has different strengths, interests, and support needs. Ama is designed primarily for school-age children, including those who can practice independently and those who benefit from caregiver guidance.

Ama creates short, personalized activities designed for just 15–20 minutes of practice a day. Activities can focus on the moments that matter most — expressing needs, understanding emotions, handling transitions, following routines, navigating social situations, building independence, practicing safety, and applying academic skills in everyday life.

Ama has been created in collaboration with researchers, parents, educators, and behavioral health professionals.

In early pilot testing with learners ages 3–17, we observed encouraging improvements in verbal communication, reading fluency and comprehension, and knowledge in select learning areas. Learners also showed strong enthusiasm and excitement about engaging with Ama.

These preliminary findings will be evaluated through additional research.

Ama was created in Ames, Iowa, by Drs. Karri Haen Whitmer and Chris Whitmer — parents who have seen firsthand how meaningful, consistent support can help their son, Ethan, thrive. Their family’s experience revealed a common challenge: skills practiced in therapy or school do not always carry naturally into everyday life, and important insights can become disconnected across families, educators, and providers.

Drawing on Karri’s work in neurobiology, accessibility, assistive technology, and inclusive education, and Chris’s background as an aerospace engineer and EdTech entrepreneur, they built Ama to help close that gap. Their shared belief is simple: every child has extraordinary potential when families and care teams have the right tools to understand, support, and grow with them.
